Life Cycle Assessment for a Luxury Retailer

Type of Project: Retail
Location: Shanghai, Seoul

Services: Sustainable Materials Services

Sul Progetto

A luxury retailer engaged our services to conduct Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for their stores in Seoul and Shanghai. We performed comprehensive LCA Phase I and Phase II analyses for both locations, providing detailed insights into the environmental impact of their material and construction choices.

  • Phase I: Seoul Store

We have analyzed 166 materials based on architectural drawings, with 138 of these materials hosted on the MATTER platform for detailed assessment. Additionally, we have conducted LCA outside of MATTER to measure the environmental impact and generate sustainability scores.

  • Phase II: Shanghai Store

Our team performed a comprehensive analysis of embodied carbon, examining the impact across different lifecycle stages and material types. Besides, we have consolidated detailed information on both globally standardized items and locally sourced materials, enhancing supplier engagement and optimizing sustainability efforts.

Project Improvements

  • 36% CO2 Emissions Reduction: Phase I recorded 303.4 kgCO2e/m², while Phase II reduced it to 223.1 kgCO2e/m².
  • 194% Circularity Increase: Circularity improved from 11% in Phase I to 32.2% in Phase II.

Scoring Enhancements

  • 19% Increase in RESET Score
  • 63% Increase in Carbon Score
  • 26% Rise in Circularity Score
  • 56% Enhancement in LEED Score

The significant score improvements observed between Phase I and Phase II were a direct result of implementing our tailored recommendations. These recommendations focused on:

  • Regular engagement with the General Contractor (GC)
  • Strengthening relationships with local suppliers
  • Collecting and analyzing data on locally sourced materials
  • Enhancing understanding of RESET standards among all parties involved
  • Utilizing MATTER for efficient database management
  • Providing a more detailed analysis
  • Developing a roadmap and templates for future projects
